I support the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance and the national Manufacturing Extension Partnership. They are vital programs helping to grow Oklahoma and build strong communities.
The MEP program is our nation’s only network of public-private partnerships providing small and medium-sized manufacturers technology-based services they need to thrive in today’s economy and create well-paying manufacturing jobs. MEP forms a nationwide network of proven resources that enables manufacturers to compete globally, supports greater supply chain integration, and provides access to information, training, and technologies that improve efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
It is the only national program providing these services to manufacturers. It is the only way this assistance reaches small manufacturers, especially in rural areas that are traditionally underserved.
Our local MEP affiliate, The Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance provides critical resources, raising the standard of living in communities across our state. Last year alone, the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance worked with nearly 400 companies, increasing sales by $284 million. For every dollar invested, the Alliance generates $69 in new sales growth and $25 in new plant/equipment investment. Over the past four years, their efforts have created and retained more than 6,100 high-wage jobs.
Nationally, MEP delivers a 17-to-1 return on investment to taxpayers. Each year, an independent firm surveys manufacturers regarding the impact they have achieved from MEP Center services. In 2016, MEP clients reported $9.4 billion new and retained sales of which $2.3 billion is new sales providing a return on investment of 17-to-1 and the creation or retention of 86,602 jobs. Considering that the average U.S. manufacturing worker earns more than $81,289 in wages and benefits per year, MEP clients are economic drivers in their communities. MEP clients are also increasing their capacity for the production of goods. MEP clients reported $3.5 billion in new investments directly attributed to their work with MEP.
MEP provides vital services to companies within critical supply chains such as automotive, aerospace, and priority defense sectors that support the growth and technological advancement of our military. It develops and deploys new services in key areas like cyber security, 3-D printing, smart factories, flexible materials, broadband technology, and supply-chain optimization.
I recognize the importance of investing wisely with federal dollars. MEP’s work is constantly reviewed and its mission is continually updated. Earlier this year the Manufacturing Extension Partnership endured the scrutiny of reauthorization by Congress. That Congressional review affirmed the important role MEP plays in growing our 21st Century economy.
